Impaired host defences in renal failure result in increased frequency and severity of infection. Vaccination can induce immunity against infections. However, in patients with chronic renal failure antibody responses to inactivated vaccines are less than normal. Additionally, sometimes the use of live vaccines are contraindicated. The antibody responses can be improved with increased vaccine dosage and some immunomodulators. Immunisation against hepatitis B virus has resulted in a decrease in prevalence. Influenza vaccine and polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine have been recommended for patients with' chronic renal failure. Cytomegalovirus vaccine may attenuate cytomegalovirus disease severity in recipients of renal allografts.
